Remember the old song from a by-gone era–“…Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of Summer! Those days of soda, and pretzels, and beer…..!”
A great song but with dangerous lyrics, according to a study of 700 kids out of Tufts University…..children love sugary drinks, like soda (aka “Pop” in Ky..), and we are all aware of the potential pitfalls of these yummy beverages—diabetes, obesity, etc…however, this Tufts’ study claims that sugary drinks ALSO lower HDL levels (also known as “good cholesterol”, which protects the heart) and increase LDL (also known as “bad cholesterol” which can injure the heart).
So what is a parent to do???? DO NOT GIVE KIDS SUGARY DRINKS, such as fruit juices and soda…..easier said than done, I know, but perhaps a sugary drink is a “sometimes” food, or maybe Crystal Lite…..nothing is better than good-old fashioned low-fat milk , H2O, or unsweetened tea….any thoughts from our PediCare Parents???
Thanks for reading, and enjoy these wonderful Summer days with your precious treasures…
